Jo Nagasaka : Schemata Architecture Office Ltd. "ARCHITECTURE TOKYO 2009" created a full-scale walk-in, sleep-in architecture exhibit, the Happa Hotel.
The two single rooms are arranged vertically, with treehouse-style platforms forming the tables, chairs and nightstands. The whole construction (except for the hammock that serves as a bed) is made of the Styrofoam used in architecture models, reinforced with wood and metal screws. (This is earthquake territory, after all). At night the steel shutters go down, sealing off hotel guests behind the front windows of the gallery in a space four meters tall and only 55 centimeters deep. The brave individuals who sign up to be living displays are afforded some token privacy a small curtain and a key to the front door that also opens the bathroom not to mention a cool location in Nakameguro and what is probably the lowest room rate in Tokyo: 3,000 yen (about $32).
Additional amenities include a coffee shop (in Schematas meeting room), an artsy gift shop and lobby reading material supplied by the local independent bookstore Utrecht, all of which can be enjoyed by day visitors too. Overnight guests, however, are more likely to get a chance to drink their morning coffee with the creators themselves before workday activity transforms the rooms. Given the innovative 24-hour use of space and the extra monetizing potential.

Established in 2004, the State of Design Festival is the largest and most innovative design event in Australia and the heart of design thinking and design activity each year.
State of Design Festival increases the awareness of the value of design and showcases how design generates innovation, promotes sustainability and adds value to business and society. Festival programs demonstrate and broadly communicate how the Victorian and Australian design profession can improve living conditions, create sustainable development opportunities, and generate new and innovative products and services; in turn, providing economic benefit for the state of Victoria.
By communicating to Victorian, Australian and international audiences, the Festival promotes a deeper understanding of design capability and value. The Festival is accessed through a highly focused program of workshops, forums, exhibitions and events. A chief concern of the Festival is to assist designers in making their "offer" more appealing to businesses and to encourage those businesses engaged with design to communicate the benefits to their peers who are not engaged.

Materialworks
We all know that materials are a key topic in design. Yet it is now emerging as the preferred topic. Something that seems more than justified. Materials have long since ceased to be regarded as just that, but rather as tools that play a decisive role in an object's design and appearance. Designers have long been aware of materials' potential versatility and take advantage of these qualities in the design and deliberate construction of their objects.
One particularly interesting field of material research in terms of product design is the change in a material's properties, for example, when particles that feature specific functions are added. Modifying a material's characteristics makes it suitable for use in totally different product segments or in completely new manufacturing and shaping procedures.
Paper is the material to be the focal point of the special exhibition designed for The Design Annual by Materialworks and Nicola Stattmann. This material, which is as simple as it is fascinating, opens up a whole range of qualitative characteristics and uses. It is employed in such disparate contexts as architecture, design, graphics, fashion, packaging and interiors as a matter of course. Paper is cost-effective, light, ecological, aesthetic, flexible and static, and available in large quantities. More recently, thanks to new developments, paper has even emerged as a high-tech material that can be processed, combined and produced quite differently. What will happen, for example, if paper has photovoltaic features, and is lasered or turns into ceramic in a furnace? The Design Annual will be construction a form of paper laboratory, in which experiments can be conducted on the tradition behind and future of paper as a material.
